We don’t see things the way they are. We see them the way WE are.

Hello, I’m Katherine! Welcome to the Vintage Kitchen. Here, we discuss all things history as it pertains to the world of culinary curiosities. On a mission to bring new life to old recipes, forgotten cookbooks, and cast aside kitchen items from the 1800’s to the 1970’s, this is where we all sit down at the table together and learn something new about the food we eat today and how it came to be.  Read more about how I  got started on this marvelous adventure here…

Peacocks and peonies and a possible hotel storyline! That’s the excitement of these five vintage restaurant ware dinner plates. Made in the 1930s by Mayer China possibly for a fancy midwestern hotel located in Kansas, this rare set features a colorful pattern of florals, birds and decorative designs. We found record of this pattern in the hotel’s inventory list in the 1950s just two decades after they remodeled some public and private spaces to include a Mandarin Room and a Persian Room. That must have been such an exotic change of scenery for a state affected by drought and dust bowls and the Great Depression. I bet a far-away aesthetic and a hotel dinner served here on these pretty plates was just the thing needed to restore a creative spirit or two. Read more about them (and see a photo of the hotel) in the shop!
